BASEMENT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ASK FIRST

Questions

Can a damp basement be finished?

Often, once the water source is understood and dealt with. Finishing over an unsolved water problem is the most expensive way to find out you had one.

How do I know if my basement has a moisture problem?

Look for white powder on masonry, stained or peeling paint, a musty smell after rain, rust at the bottom of metal, and rings on the floor. Photograph them before cleaning. Our water page explains what each sign can mean.

Can I make a bedroom in my basement?

Often, if it has a code-compliant exit window or door, enough ceiling height and the right alarms. Your city or village decides the details for your address.

Can I add a bathroom?

Often. It depends on how deep and how far the main drain is. A pump pit is the usual answer when the fixtures sit below the drain.

Will I need a permit?

Finishing work that adds walls, electrical, plumbing or a bedroom usually does. Requirements vary by municipality. See our permits page.

What if my ceiling is low?

Ducts, pipes and beams can sometimes be moved or boxed in smaller. Sometimes the answer is an open ceiling or a different use for the room. Measure the clear height under the lowest items.

Should I worry about radon?

Radon is a gas that can collect in lower levels of any home. Testing is cheap and simple, and a finished basement is a good moment to test before the walls go up. See our radon page.

How long does a basement take?

It depends on scope, inspections and your city or village. Every project gets a written schedule before work starts, and any change is written up.

Can I stay in the house?

Usually yes. Dust, noise and stair access are discussed first.

What should I bring to the walk-through?

Photos, the checklist on our walk-through page and anything you know about past water, repairs or tests.
